The frame loom is usually square or rectangular. On two end of
the loom is pegs or gaps to feed the warp with cotton, wool, ribbon or other
material you are using. With this type
of loom you can only create an item that is the actual size of the loom you are
using. For example a four inch square
loom could only create up to a maximum of a four inch product. If you required an item bigger than the loom,
you can create several items and sew them together. This is great for place mats, tapestry, leg
warmers etc.
In this category of loom, there is a wide variety of types and styles. Some come with utensils built in, others don’t. Some come with pegs to lock on the warp thred, others have gaps to feed it through. Some you only work on the front of the loom, others you feed the warp over the front and back. In this regard, you need to have some idea of what you wish to create to ensure you get the right loom. You could build up your collection to have different looms for different purposes. The choice is yours. Let’s have a look at some examples of how the frame loom is used: |

The size of the loom can be from small to big. The example we looked at above is probably considered more of a table look as it operates better on a table. You could use this loom on your lap as well. Let's look at another example.

The Loom Kit (what you need)
Side note: Some weaving looms use the shed stick to separate each second row of warp cotton to allow the shuttle to go through. Others don't. Some looms (especially the smaller ones) use a tapestry needle instead of a shuttle to thread the weft cotton through the warp. It will depend on what weaving loom you are using as to which combination will best fit. Tips
Unfortunately, most instruction manuals (better referred to as booklets) that come with weaving looms aren't overly explanative regarding how to use them. For this reason, I would recommend you either access sites such as this or go searching on youtube (or equivalent) to see how other people are doing it. Apart from that happy weaving. |
