Impact Today
It is indisputable that weaving has had a prominent role in our
history. This is apparent in the
home, at social locations, and commercially. Could it be
possible though, that the art of weaving, and the use of weaving looms, is dying in
the home environment. As well, this is
not just referring to the new generation of today. There are second and even third generations of people that never gained these skills.
A further issue, is that many of today’s youth consider the concept of weaving, knitting and such crafts, activities that are done by the elderly grandmother. What many fail to realise, is that the elderly grandmother gained these skills in her youth (often with the mentoring of her mother). A further issue, is that many in the male population consider this activity solely that of the female. This is untrue. Especially with the weaving loom. Both sexes can benefit from it’s use. By no means should it be considered a 'girlie' activity. In this fast paced world, using a weaving loom can have distinctly two benefits. First, you get to create a masterpiece that is unique to your own design. A weaving loom can make your production relatively quickly. In the end you have a usable item. It could be created for yourself, as a present, a donation to a charitable cause and, even for some, a salable item. The second benefit is relative to this fast paced world we are living in. Using a weaving loom is relatively easy to learn and there is a certain level of repetition involved. The mind can use this time to release stress and analyse the events of the day. This can be especially beneficial for people that have stressful lives. Unfortunately, a substantial number of youth of today are only interested in where they can get enjoyment. They can’t see any enjoyment in crafting activities. Enjoyment is more like going to parties and gathering with friends. If they require something, it’s easier to just go to the two dollar store and buy a cheap knock off of it. It is irrelevant if it doesn’t last that long. They can just go and buy another one. Further, this just reflects the disposable society that we live in. It’s important to consider what would happen if these stores closed down overnight. At the time of this writing, this has already happened to a number of those two dollar stores. With the cost of living increasing as it is, it is becoming difficult for many people to survive financially. It is in these situations where these skills are vital. If you never gain them, you will never have them. It is important that these skills aren’t lost. People need to stop and think, before they go to buy items as to whether or not they would be better off making them themselves. http://theweavingloom.weebly.com/ |
