As the name implies, the square loom is usually square. This type of loom has pegs of gaps on all
four sides. The square loom comes in a
variety of different sizes. They are
usually created for a specific size project.
The size of the loom you use will depict the size of your intended finished
product.
As with other looms, the warp threat is the first. With the square loom you can either have one long warp that threads through the pegs on either end or, you can have a multitude of shorter threads where a new peg gets a new thread. Most of the kits you purchase for this type of loom comes with the material. If it is individual threads for each peg then they are usually pre-cut to size. Once the warp is secured, you can add the weft. As with the warp, the weft is either one long piece of the material that is continuously used or, individual pre-cut pieces for each peg. The square loom threads as other similar looms in that the weft goes under and over each warp it passes. Let’s have a look at some examples of how the frame loom is used: |

When using a square loom you need to take note of the distance between the pegs. If they are close together, you can use thinner material for the weft. If they are further apart, you need to use thicker material. If the pegs have a too much distance between them and you use thin material there will be major gaps in it that won't look too good (unless that is what you are planning for).

Potholders can be made from various materials. There is also material similar to rubber bands that can be used. The stretchy material comes with a lot of the Potholder loom kits that you can purchase today.

Unfortunately, most instruction manuals (better referred to as booklets) that come with weaving looms aren't overly explanative regarding how to use them. For this reason, I would recommend you either access sites such as this or go searching on youtube (or equivalent) to see how other people are doing it.
Apart from that happy weaving. |
